Book Review: Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl

“On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?” (Written by Twentieth Century Fox, IMDb)

Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl is an edge-of-the-seat thrill ride. I decided that before I watched this highly anticipated movie, that I would listen to the audiobook. And boy, am I glad I did. I still haven’t seen the movie yet, but the book was great! It really is a “he said, she said” kind of book, sharing two sides of a very complex story.

Nick Dunne: [Opening lines] When I think of my wife, I always think of the back of her head. I picture cracking her lovely skull, unspooling her brain, trying to get answers. The primal questions of a marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? What have we done to each other? What will we do? (IMDb)

If you haven’t watched the movie, or read the book, I won’t give away any spoilers. But I will say this… the movie better be just as good as the book! Hopefully it will be, considering the fact that the screenplay was written by the author, Gillian Flynn.

While listening to the book, I often pictured Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne and Rosamund Pike as Amy Dunne. I hope their performances live up to my expectations of their characters.

The visual descriptions in Gone Girl are stunning. While listening to the audiobook, I could literally visualize the movie in my head. I could see the turned over ottoman, the abandoned mall, the clues left by Amy for Nick to find, and the Amazing Amy books. I also look forward to seeing how Tyler Perry portrays Tanner Bolt and how Neil Patrick Harris portrays Desi Collings.

Until I see the movie, here are some other books (also written by women) I may check out, thanks to Cosmopolitan.
