Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is next week, and thousands of people are preparing to either travel to visit family and/or friends, vacation in warmer destinations, or cook the Thanksgiving meal. I, myself, fall into the last category because last year, my husband and I spent Thanksgiving in Las Vegas!

Like so many, I will be preparing the entire meal for the first time. Of course, my husband will help with the ham. No, we’re not having the traditional turkey for Thanksgiving. I may go to the store and purchase a small amount of turkey, but the main meat will be ham. Side dishes will include a salad, sweet potato casserole, crinkle cut carrots, green beans, stuffing, Sister Shubert rolls, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie. I will also make some chex mix as well as a sweet snack of some sort.

Now that we all know what I’m making for Thanksgiving, let’s get to some helpful tips for those Thanksgiving newbies!

PopSugar Food put together a great planner for those of us who like to plan out every detail.

And Kludgy Mom has some great non-conventional ideas for this Thanksgiving season, such as volunteer at a soup kitchen, go see a movie, organize a flag football game before the Thanksgiving meal, watch a movie marathon, take your Thanksgiving meal on the road, or take a vacation.

  1. Our oldest son is participating in a district wide marching band that will be in the Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia this year. So … we will be staying up there and going out to eat for dinner. 🙂 Very non-traditional but we are looking forward to making some fun memories!

    1. Joy, that sounds like you’ll be having a great Thanksgiving! I love watching the parades, especially all the different bangs that participate. I was in the band in high school, so parades were fun for me. Stay warm and have a great Thanksgiving!
