Wanderlust Wednesday: Bali

Since “Eat Pray Love” came out in 2010, starring Julia Roberts as author Elizabeth “Liz” Gilbert, I have wanderlusted over the Indonesian island of Bali. The beauty of this island, as Julia Roberts rode around on her bicycle, drew me in from the very beginning. In March of this year, Bali was named the world’s top travel destination by TripAdvisor in it’s Traveler’s choice award.

“Bali is a living postcard, an Indonesian paradise that feels like a fantasy. Soak up the sun on a stretch of fine white sand, or commune with the tropical creatures as you dive along coral ridges or the colorful wreck of a WWII war ship. On shore, the lush jungle shelters stone temples and mischievous monkeys. The “artistic capital” of Ubud is the perfect place to see a cultural dance performance, take a batik or silver-smithing workshop, or invigorate your mind and body in a yoga class.” {Source: TripAdvisor}

Liz Gilbert found inner peace and a balance of true love in Indonesia, and the film version of her “eat pray love” journey of self discovery was filmed in Ubud and Padang-Padang Beach in Bali. I remember that Julia, as Liz, would meditate and the beautiful landscapes of Bali caught my eye. The temples alone in Bali are stunning and the experience of visiting one of them could prove quite enlightening, meditative, and serene.

Going into one of the many temples is on everyone’s must-see-must-do list when they visit Bali. Take these dress code tips into consideration before entering one of the temples.

Traveling to Bali is not cheap, but you can definitely get there on a budget. Check out The Blonde Abroad‘s tips on “How to Travel to Bali on a Budget.”

Bali has some affordable places to stay, but they also have some beautiful {and expensive} resorts. Wander with Jo has put together a great list of places to stay in Bali.

One thing that should be on every adventurer’s bucket list when they visit Bali is the Ubud swing. For an adventure of a lifetime, check out Backpacker Story for all the details on this swing.
