Woman of Style: Julia Roberts

With her trademark smile, Julia Roberts burst onto the scene as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman, and she hasn’t looked back. The two films I remember seeing her in before her Pretty Woman fame was Satisfaction (1988) and Mystic Pizza (1988). Julia Roberts once said about her success, “I’m just a girl from a little town in Georgia who had this giant, absurd dream.” (Source: IMDb) She played clarinet in the band in school and after graduating from high school, left Georgia for New York to become an actress. Well, this girl from the little town of Symrna, Georgia, has done some pretty amazing things […]

Woman of Style: Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet stole Leo DiCaprio’s heart in Titanic and she helped Sir Richard Branson’s mother, Eve, to safety when their house caught on fire on Necker Island. She has acted in dramas as well as romantic comedies, The Holiday being one of my all-time favorites. But to me, she is more than just an actress. She is a role model for women everywhere because she exudes a confidence in herself and in her body, making her this month’s “Woman of Style.” In 2002, she had this to say about doing nude scenes: “I like exposing myself. There’s not an awful […]

Fabulous and Over 40

Now that I’m in my 40s, I tend to find myself drawn to actresses over 40. They have a maturity, yet a young and playful side to them, that I find appealing and down-to-earth. Wendi McClendon-Covey. Melissa McCarthy. Octavia Spencer. Amy Poehler. Debra Messing.  These beautiful women are some of the most incredibly talented and funny women in movies and television today… and they are all fabulous and over 40! They have starred (separately, and sometimes together) in some of my favorite movies and TV shows. Wendi and Melissa co-starred in the all-female hit Bridesmaids, but I love Wendi as the sexpot […]

Live Every Day Like Elle Woods

Legally Blonde may have come out in 2001, but the lesson I learned from that movie is timeless. It’s also a lesson that I think every woman should live by. What lesson is that, Vanessa? Well… I’ll tell you. Image borrowed from Chef Maribeth Elle: You’re breaking up with me because I’m too… blonde? Warner Huntington III: Well, no. That’s not entirely true… Elle: Then what? My boobs are too big? Elle Woods was dumped by her boyfriend, Warner, because he “needs to marry a Jackie, not a Marilyn.” This rejection forced her to step out of her comfort zone and apply herself and her brain […]

Woman of Style: Alicia Vikander

“It’s almost a kick that I’m looking for. I like to push myself, find new sides of myself and see how different the characters are that I can create with my craft.” – Alicia Vikander, Oscar-winning actress and star of the new movie, The Light Between Oceans. When I saw Alicia Vikander take the stage in her yellow strapless high-low dress to accept her Oscar, I knew then that she had a beauty and a style that couldn’t be match by any other actress. This is why she is this month’s “Woman of Style.” Vikander won both the Academy Award and the […]
