Wanderlust Wednesday: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Later this summer, Rio de Janeiro will be hosting the Summer Olympics. And despite the Zika virus flying around down in Brazil (’cause it’s flying around here in the U.S. as well), Rio de Janeiro is a city full of beauty. I want to walk on the Copacabana Beach, walk up and down the colorful Escadaria Selaron (a stairway decorated by Chilean-born artist Jorge Selaron), and stand at the feet of the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer.

“Rio de Janeiro? But it’s not safe!”

If you think about it, nowhere is 100% safe, but if take the necessary precautions and travel safely and wisely, then I think you’ll be OK. If you want to some safety tips and advice about traveling to Rio de Janeiro, then check out The Borderless Project. They advise to pay extra for radio taxis, use cash only (because of skimmers), and to stay is safe areas like Imanema, Copacabana, and Lapa.

So what’s there to see and do in Rio? LOTS!!! And some of it’s free!

You can, of course, ride the cable cars up Sugarloaf Mountain; or you could hike the 45 minutes up the Morro da Urca! You can dance the night away at the nightclubs or bars. Or you can, like me, turn in early and maybe have your pick of a prime beach spot before it gets too crowded.

When FIFA was held in Rio in 2014, “Make My Trip” put together 10 places to see while in Rio de Janeiro. They included visiting the Ipanema Hippie Fair (which takes place on every Sunday); eating at a traditional Brazilian steakhouse; and hiking the highest peak, the Pico de Tijuca, which overlooks Guanabara Bay, a 100-foot Cascatinha waterfall, and overlooks the city.
