How to Be a Woman Who is Winning

On Sundays, I like to sit on the front porch wrapped in a blanket, with a large cup of hot chocolate, and watch the cows mosey around in the field across from my house. (Yes, I live in the country.) It’s during this quiet time that I think about not only my Sunday, or what I’m going to accomplish today, but about what exciting and new things that my upcoming week holds for me.

Last night when I was pinning, I found this quote and for some reason, it really hit home for me. It really made me think about the kind of woman I think I am and the kind of woman I want to be.

  1. Look and smell good.
As women, we should take pride in ourselves and our appearance. Regardless of how we are feeling, we should get up (out of bed, off the couch, or out of that comfy chair), take a shower or a bath, and get dressed. It doesn’t matter if you have no where to go, just the process of getting up and getting ready may motivate you to actually leave your house or your apartment and go somewhere. You could head to church, the mall or the grocery store. And in the end, you will know that you look and smell good. On days when I know I don’t have anything planned, I still take a quick shower and get dressed, and then I spritz on some of my favorite perfume, even if I’m just going to the library or the bank.
  2. Dresses and speaks well.
This part of the quote reminds me of something that Coco Chanel once said. “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” Dressing and speaking well adds confidence. I wear scrubs all week long, but the nights and weekends are for me. I dress for me, and that means dressing well. As an English major, I pay attention to everyone’s speech. My Aunt Juanita even called me the grammar police. Speaking well shows that you have pride in yourself.
  3. Love and laughs often.
I tell my family and friends that I love them, and I mean it. I don’t take those three words (“I love you”) lightly or forgranted, whether I say them or they’re said to me. And I love to laugh. I have a loud, sometimes boisterous, laugh that comes from deep within my belly. I like to think that it’s infectious, but not in a bad way. And I love to laugh until I cry. They say laughter is the best medicine, which is probably why I feel like I’m super healthy.
  4. Is kind and giving.
Being kind to others is good for you. It doesn’t make you a pushover. It makes you happy. It makes people seek you out. And it may even make you live longer. Being giving does not necessarily mean to give monetarily. It could be as simple as giving your time and attention to someone in need. These two traits can be seen as negatives, but turn them into positives and you’ll find success.
  5. Has drive and ambition.
Having drive and ambition as a woman can lead some people to call you certain names (like the one that rhymes with witch). What those people don’t understand is that without drive and ambition, you’d be stuck in a rut, going no where, spinning your wheels. Who wants that, right?
  6. Has confident and class.
The two C’s. Confidence – no matter who you are – can elevate your class. I love to people watch and you can tell those women who are confident in themselves. To me, those are some classy women because they exude a confidence that I find attractive. I try to emulate that confidence because it makes me feel like I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, and I like that feeling.
  7. Fears no one but God.
There is not much that I fear, except for God. Fears can tear down your confidence, your drive and ambition, and your self-esteem. Don’t fear the woman next to you. If she’s a classy woman, she will help to build you up and not tear you down.
  8. Is all about her business.
A woman who possesses all of these positive character traits will always be about her business. She will not let you or anyone derail her train. She has her life to live and she’s going to do everything in her power to lead a successful life.

I want to be this woman. I want to look and smell good. I want to dress and speak well. I want to love and laugh often. I want to be kind and giving. I want to have drive and ambition. I want to have confidence and class. I want to fear no one but God. I want to be all about my business. I want to a woman who is winning at life, at love, at work… at everything!

What kind of woman do you want to be?

Yours Truly,
Vanessa
