Book Review: Hunger Games Trilogy

Katniss. Gale. Peeta. It’s the love triangle that has the hearts and minds of this generation catching fire!

I just finished listening to the final book in the Hunger Games Trilogy. All three books were very well-written. Suzanne Collins sure knows how to spin a phrase.

The Hunger Games, Book 1, introduces us to several memorable characters: Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers as tribute in place of her sister in the Reaping; Katniss’ best friend, Gale Hawthorne, who loves her and promises to take care of her family in the event that she doesn’t come back from the Hunger Games; and Peeta Mellark, the male tribute selected to go into the Games and who proclaims his love for Katniss in a pre-Games interview.

Peeta Mellark: I just keep wishing I could think of a way to show them that they don’t own me. If I’m gonna die, I wanna still be me. Does it make any sense?
Katniss Everdeen: Yeah. I just can’t afford to think like that.

We also get to know Effie, Haymitch, Cinna, President Snow, Primrose Everdeen, Finnick, Johanna, as well as dozens of other wonderful characters.

Catching Fire, Book 2, brings the main characters back home to District 12, doing a victory tour of all the districts, and making minor rebellious comments or actions. Soon Katniss and Peeta are once again thrown into the Games as President Snow announces a special 75th edition of the Hinger Games, known as the Quarter Quell. Katniss and Peeta team up with other former tributes and manage to destroy the Hunger Gamesa arena. Katniss is rescued from the arena by rebellion forces while Peeta is captured by the Capital.

Mockingjay, Book 3, is all about the rebellion. We learn that the Capital fire-bombed District 12, and that Gale was able to rescue both his and Katniss’ families and transport them to District 13, which survived by living underground and is led by President Coin. In exchange for being the face of the rebellion, Katniss makes conditions for the captured tributes so they would be freed and not killed, which included her Peeta. When Peeta and the other tributes are rescued and brought back to District 13, he attempts to strangle Katniss because he was brainwashed by President Snow and with the use of “tracker jacker” juice, had his memories of Katniss altered. The rest of the story is about how Katniss leads a small group of rebel soldiers and tributes on a raid towards the Capital with the intent to complete the vengeful task killing President Snow.

I won’t give away the ending, but let’s just say that it was a bit of surprise, yet happy ending. Even though this series is targeted to young adults, I think the books are a wonderful read, or in my case, a wonderful listen (as I listened to the audiobooks to and from work).

I have watched the first movie, but I think I’ll watch it again before I watch the second movie.

Have you read the books? What did you think about this trilogy? What do you think about the first two movies? Did you think that the movies were well adapted from the books? I would love to hear from you!

Have a great day, and enjoy a great book, to two, or three!
