Walking for a Good Cause: Save the Ta-Tas

On Saturday, October 27th, I joined thousands of other people who participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Knoxville, TN.

The 5K course took racers and walkers through downtown Knoxville. I walked with Katy and her husband, Russ, and we had a great time! It rained just a little bit during the first mile, but it eventually stopped and it cooled the air considerably. Several of my other co-workers were participating, but I could only find Katy when the race was getting ready to start.

The three of us finished in 1-hour and 22 minutes. I think we could of finished it in under an hour but the start of the race was thick with participants and getting going was slow. Also, we stopped every now and then to take a few photos.

Hundreds of walkers ahead of us…
And we had just past mile marker 1.
This couple brought tears to our eyes. The woman in the hot pink jacket was walking for her sister, Renee, and herself. Her name is Julie and she is a seven-year breast cancer survivor. The man was walking for his wife, Julie (the lady in the hot pink jacket), “the love of his life.”
These two young men, Austin and Tanner, were standing on the side of the road with this adorable sign: “Thank U 4 walking 4 our future wives.”
I was walking in celebration of my grandma Lashlee and my friend, Charlene Giles. I also walked in celebration of my Aunt Juanita Howard, who is a breast cancer survivor, and in memory of my Aunt Barbara Howard, who passed away from breast cancer this past January.
This dog walked the entire 5K in his adorable tu-tu in celebration of all the breast cancer survivors!
I had Katy take this photo of me just because I thought it was a hilarious shot… because my head is between two eyes… funny, right?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it affects thousands and thousands of women on a daily basis. This disease has affected the lives of my family because my Aunt Juanita is a breast cancer survivor, my aunt Barbara (Howard) died of breast cancer in January, and my mom’s friend (and my friend), Charlene Giles, is also a breast cancer survivor.

This disease has affected the lives of celebrities, politicians, soldiers, mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, friends and everyone who knows them. We love and support them day after day and we raise money for the research of cures and walk to show our support to those who passed away, for those survivors, and for those who are going through chemotherapy and radiation right now.

Did you participate in a Komen Race or Walk? I’d love to hear from you!

Have a great day!
