Trying to keep up with the stylish “It Girls” of Instagram and their level of trendiness can be hard. But today, I’m sharing a few tips on how to be trendy, even when you’re not.

Mix Prints

Stripes and florals. Checkerboard and polka-dots. In other words, feel free to mix any prints or patterns you want to and create your own style.

Be Comfortable

You can look trendy and comfortable. Remember that because the second you put on something trendy and you’re not comfortable, you’ll regret your fashion choice.

Get Bold and Try It

Bold fashion doesn’t necessarily mean bright colors {like the trendy ones below}. It could be a bold pattern or a mix of bold colors, or it could be whatever “bold” means to you.

Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Fashion doesn’t always have to be about being trendy. It’s also about having fun. So regardless of your age, have fun with your fashion choices. Embrace your unique style and own it!

“In Tokyo, there are no rules when it comes to street fashion. Current trends have little or no influence. Vintage cultural references and vintage clothing appear to have far more influence than the latest runway looks from Paris, Milan or London.” {Messy Nessy Chic}

Avoid Overly Trendy Styles

I know that animal prints are super trendy right now, and I’ve avoided this print until last month when I found a really soft sweater with a print that didn’t scream “Look at me, I’m trendy!”

You can avoid overly trendy styles by styling them in an understated way.

Have a Style for Every Occasion

Sticking with a neutral color palette will ensure that you will look stylish and “on trend”. Dress for the occasion.

As you go along, looking and analyzing the current season’s trends, ask yourself:

  • Do I really like it?
  • Do I need it?
  • Does this outfit give me confidence?
  • Does owning it add value to my life?
  • Does it do the job?
  • Do I wear it, use it, care about it?

If you can’t answer “yes” to these questions, then you don’t need it.

And don’t forget that you can shop thrift and second-hand stores and find some trendy items for a fraction of the cost! Check out some of my thrifty and trendy buys.
