Special Dinner Party with Famous Mothers & Daughters

Today is Mother’s Day and I’m throwing a special {albeit imaginary} dinner party for some special celebrity mothers and their daughters. These daughters are breaking the mold and setting the stage to take over the world that their celebrity mothers helped create.

Invited to this year’s Mother’s Day dinner party are Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Carys Douglas, Reese Witherspoon and Ava Phillippe, and Keri and Yara Shahidi. Together with my mom and I, we will share a delicious meal and a fun activity while we bond over our love of fashion and style, and most importantly, the lessons we learned from our mothers.

First I thought we’d share a light lunch before heading to Painting with a Twist for a fun, fine art experience. Then we will head back to my home for dinner and conversation.

“Being on set with my daughter watching her in front of the camera was a fantastic experience. I am so proud of her.” – Cindy said of her daughter, Kaia Gerber.

“She showed me how to use makeup to enhance your beauty, but not to change your face, which I think is important.” – Kaia said of her mother, CIndy.

“There is nothing like the love I have for my daughter. We share every emotion with each other, our hopes, and dreams.” – Reese Witherspoon said of her daughter, Ava Phillippe.

I love being around my mom, and this shoot {for the Draper James Spring 2018 collection} was an opportunity to have fun and support her work as a female entrepreneur. She also brings a lot of comfort and positive energy with her to work, and I think it’s inspiring to see her personal relationships with everybody on set.” Ava said of her mother, Reese.

“Yeah, well she’s pretty individual, very strong young lady and that I think is what I admire about her more than anything. She’s strong and smart, has good morals and good judgment, which for a [teenager], you never quite know what you’re gonna get,” Catherine Zeta-Jones said of her daughter, Carys Douglas.

“You have guided me throughout this industry so that I do what I love and I feel like that’s not common. What I learned was that you made the character whether it was a woman biting into cheese, whether it was us at the beach together, you made the character somebody who you aspire to be,” Yara tells her mom, Keri Shahidi.

“You are authentically yourself and you are happy to represent young people and young women of color and I am very proud of that. you are authentically a beautiful human that has been placed here to do something,” said Keri on her pride in her daughter, Yara.

So what would I ask these mothers and daughters? Here are a few questions on my list:

  1. What makes you happy?
  2. What is your fondest memory of each other?
  3. Has your mother told you about her first date with your father?
  4. Who are your role models?
  5. For the mothers… what do or did you love the most about your own mother?
  6. What lessons did your mother teach you that you are passing on to your daughters?
  7. For the daughters… what’s one thing that you don’t understand about your mother?
  8. What traits of your own mother do you think you’ve inherited?
  9. Describe yourself in three words.
  10. What do you love most about your body?

What would you ask these mothers and daughters?

For dinner, I would start by serving a salad that is as tasty and endless as Olive Garden’s. Then I would have a selection of pastas {spaghetti, bowties, and cork screws}, as well as a lasagna and fettuccine {made with chicken and broccoli}. I make a pretty good homemade pasta sauce. Then I would have some Italian bread with garlic butter. To end the meal, I would serve a selection of mini-cheesecakes.

My mom, Virginia, would be with me for this special Mother’s Day dinner party. My mom and I are very close. Through my happiest times and through my roughest times, my mom has supported me and loved me unconditionally. She has been patient with me and has taught me how to be gracious and kind to my fellow human beings. We have bonded over our mutual love of romantic comedies, purses, and gardening. She loves my husband almost as much as I do, and she has embraced his family as a part of her extended family.

This Mother’s Day dinner party would be extra special for my mother because, not only would I be celebrating this wonderful woman on Mother’s Day, but I would be celebrating her birthday, which was this past Thursday {May 10th}.

Happy Mother’s Day to the extraordinary mothers and daughters who came to my dinner party, including my own mother! And Happy Birthday to the woman who brought me into this world!

Don’t forget to call you mother today!

Yours Truly,
Vanessa
