Dressing Room Re-Do

Several months ago, my husband and I moved from a rectanugular-shaped studio apartment above his grandmother’s garage into the main house. The house is small, but large enough for the two of us and our three fur-babies. Now we use the studio apartment as a guest room, although, we rarely, if ever, have overnight guests.

Several years after we moved in with Maw, my husband took over one of the small spare bedrooms and turned it into his office/adult collectibles (i.e. hot rod and motorcycle memorabilia) room. And since we moved into the main house, we now sleep in Maw’s bedroom. This room is also small. In fact, it’s too small to fit all our of usual bedroom furniture. As of now, we only have our king-size bed, his dresser, a small bookcase, and both of our small bedside tables. That is why I have taken over the other small bedroom in the house and turned it into my dressing room.

My goal is that by next spring, I’ll have it cleared out, the old blue carpet pulled up, the original hardwood floors cleaned and shined up a bit, and my dream dressing room will be a reality. In the meantime, I’ve been looking at Pinterest for ideas.

Harper’s Bazaar featured “13 enviable closets from Pinterest” and I have to say, there are some really fabulous ideas in this article.

Another good site to look at for ideas is Apartment Therapy. They have a lot of great hack ideas using Ikea furniture and storage pieces, like the 2×2 Expedits and the Billy Bookcase.

Apparently there are a lot of items at Ikea that can be used to create your dream closet, including bookcases and storage squares. Check out the DIY Ikea closet island that Jordan made for under $500.

My dressing room is not large enough to put a chaise lounge and a large ottoman, so I may have to opt for one over the other. Seeing this Serena shoe ottoman at Front Gate makes choosing an ottoman over a chaise lounge just a little bit easier.

House Beautiful had some great ideas on how anyone can turn their spare bedroom into their dream closet. I’ll definitely be taking some of these ideas into account when I start my dream closet re-do.

HB says to buy a garment rack. This would come in handy, especially if you didn’t have enough closet space to begin with. Next, put either a bench (in my case, a storage bench), sofa or chair in the room. This will allow you to sit down in a comfy spot while you’re getting dressed. Have a dressing table in the room, whether it be a dresser, a desk, or a table, so you can display three-tiered jewelry holders, purses or hats. This is where I think that closet island Jordan made would come in handy. Dress up the space with flowers and picture frames. Really make this room your own. Although artificial light is necessary in a room at night, really try to bring in some natural lighting into the room. Thankfully, I have two windows in my room to let in the natural light. And finally, fill the room with inspirational items, like framed fashion or beauty quotes, or beautiful artwork of destinations you’d love to visit, like Paris, Italy, India, or London.

So what room in your house would you love to re-do? I’d love to hear about your past or future renovation ideas, so leave your comments and a link to your renovations below so I can check them out.

Have a great day!
