Find the King and You’ll Have Good Luck!

Growing up in West Texas, I never celebrated, or for that matter, heard of Mardi Gras. It wasn’t until my family moved to Biloxi, Miss., in 1989, that Mardi Gras even entered my life. The purple, yellow, and green costumes and masks; the dozens of parades up and down the coast in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas; the beads, small and large; and the King Cakes.

My last two years in high school were spent in Biloxi, Miss., and in February I participated in several parades because I was in the band and we marched in the parades. It was a fun, memorable bucket list item that I checked off my list! Even school was cancelled for three days in honor of Mardi Gras.

My senior year in high school, I was “blessed” to get the baby in my piece of King Cake. Here is a great recipe for King Cake, just don’t forget to put the baby in the cake.

Many movies have featured Mardi Gras parades, and the HBO series, ‘Treme, has featured Mardi Gras in several of their episodes. The most famous, and some of the wildest, parades take place in New Orleans.

American Mardi Gras is similar to Carnival in Rio de Janiero, Brazil (check it out here); although, I’m sure the costumes at Carnival are a wee bit skimpier than those in New Orleans.

So forget your inhibitions and let loose during Mardi Gras, because a time of repentance, fasting, and reflection comes on Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.

Until then, have a great day and may you be blessed with the King Cake baby!
