I’ve been without internet for a few days, so I’ve been watching movies. I watched Real Steel with Hugh Jackman and Thor with Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. I know I’m probably behind the times when it comes to watching new release movies, but I’ll eventually watch them. Thankfully, my local library has a great selection of movies that I can check out for a week at a time.
So if you are stuck in the house on a Saturday afternoon – or any day or night, for that matter – you could watch such classic “chick flicks” like 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink, or Say Anything. But no matter your mood, I’ve got a few worth-your-time selections that are good for anytime, whether you’re calling it a “girl’s night in” or a “date night.”
Can you name the movie these quotes are from?
Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey danced their way into our hearts because as everyone knows, “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.” Dirty Dancing, which came out just three years after Footloose (1984), made everyone dance a little dirtier than they used to.
Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have made several movies together and they have such a great chemistry in all of them, especially in The Wedding Singer. Adam Sandler plays Robbie Hart, a wedding singer who gets stood up on his wedding day and becomes friends with waitress Julia, played by Drew Barrymore, and ends up helping her plan her wedding to Glenn. The soundtrack is pretty good and the most romantic part was when Robbie serenaded Julia on the plane.
The movie to see last year was Bridesmaids, written by SNL’s Kristin Wiig and her writing partner, Annie Mumolo. This movie brings female raunchiness to a whole new level. And Wilson Phillips’ cameo at the end of the movie? Well, that was priceless, especially for anyone (like myself) who likes Wilson Phillips.
For the men in our lives, they go for movies like The Hangover or the rough-and-tumble Fight Club, where “the first rule of Fight Club is: you don’t talk about Fight Club.” Brad Pitt and Edward Norton are fantastic in this movie, which was based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk.
Besides Tombstone and The Quick and the Dead, I really enjoyed 3:10 to Yuma, starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. The screenplay was written by Halstead Welles, Michael Brandt, and Derek Haas, and was based on a short story by Elmore Leonard. I can’t explain why this movie is so good, but it’s worth watching over and over!
And finally, an inspirational movie along the same lines as We Are Marshall, The Blind Side, and Coach Carter. Based on a true story, Forever Strong is about a troubled young rugby player, played by Sean Faris, who has to choose between jail and playing for a rival rugby team coached by Larry Gelwix (played by Gary Cole), who not only builds championship teams, but championship boys. This movie shows how a strong ethical code is used to achieve victory both on and off the field. This movie also features Sean Astin, and Penn Badgley.
If there’s a movie you think I should watch, just leave your suggestion in the comments below. Until then, have a great movie matinee, whether it be day or night!
Yours Truly,
Vanessa
