I'm Gonna Knock You Out

I’m not a big fan of boxing. The blood. The brutality. The sometimes life-changing injuries these athletes suffer. So this is just not a sport I can get into, if you know what I mean. But, the other day after I had a minor office procedure done, I was home channel surfing and ended up stopping on the HBO documentary of the Klitschko brothers, a pair of Ukranian heavyweight boxers. Both brothers are over 6’7″ and each have a reach of over 80-inches.   Photo Source: Amazon “A documentary portrait of boxing brothers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko who between them […]

Remembering Great Talent

I forgot how beautiful Whitney Houston’s voice was until I turned on the TV and watched her in Sparkle, her last acting role before her tragic death. Even though this movie is a couple of years old, seeing Whitney Houston brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. She played an over-protective mother of aspiring singer-songwriter Sparkle (played by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks). Sparkle forms a trio with her sisters, Sister Williams (played by Carmen Ejogo) and Delores Williams (played by Tika Sumpter). This movie was to have been Whitney Houston’s acting comeback, as she […]

Reflecting on Lent

“Throw me some beads, mister!” The last day of gluttony, debauchery, wild celebrations, and a last hoo-rah for anyone and everyone preparing for the upcoming Lent season is today – “Fat Tuesday”, for tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. As anyone knows who participates in Lent, Ash Wednesday starts the fasting and religious obligations associated with the season of Lent. This year, Lent begins on Wednesday, Feb. 13th, and go until Saturday, March 30th, with Easter Sunday on March 31st. Being from West Texas, I don’t ever recall being familiar with Mardi Gras or “Carnaval”… that is, until I moved to Biloxi, Miss., and was given […]

A Great Moment in American History

I’ve watched many a movie about moments in American history. Black Hawk Down. Pearl Harbor. Saving Private Ryan. Band of Brothers. So tonight when I found myself channel surfing, I made the executive decision to watch The Great Raid, which was based on William Breuer’s book of the same name. I was lucky enough to have met Mr. Breuer on several occasions when I was a news reporter in Cleveland, Tenn. Mr. Breuer has written over 30 books, focusing on World War II, the CIA, and the FBI, as well as the Korean War. The Great Raid is about the raid at Cabanatuan where 500 American soilders were […]

Do You Know Your Type?

Do you know your type? No, I’m not talking your blood type, or what type of mate you’re looking for. I’m talking about your personality type. I recently read an article (I can’t remember where) that mentioned taking an “Enneagram” test. According to the Enneagram Institute website, the Enneagram is defined as “a geometric figure that delineates the nine basic personality types of human nature and their complex interrelationships.” Photo Source: Enneagram Institute The Enneagram of Personality (according to Wikipedia) is “a model of human personality which is principally used as a typology of nine interconnected personality types.” Enneagram comes […]
