Woman of Style: Nina Garcia

I have never seen a bad photo of Nina Garcia, who, if you don’t already know, is the Editor-in-Chief of ELLE and a Project Runway judge. This Columbian fashion journalist has an enviable style, and she shares her style tips in each of her four books. And in honor of New York Fashion Week, I decided to make her this month’s “Woman of Style.”

Nina began her career in the fashion industry in the early 1980s. She worked in the public relations department for Perry Ellis and its then-designer, Marc Jacobs. After leaving Marc Jacobs, she moved to Mirabella. From there, she became the Fashion Director for ELLE. In 2012, she was named the creative director for Marie Claire.

On September 18, 2017, Nina succeeded Robbie Myers as the new Editor-in-Chief of ELLE.

Nina sat out NYFW this past February because she underwent a preventative double mastectomy after undergoing genetic testing that ultimately proved she carried a genetic mutation and was at a high risk for breast cancer. You can read more about her decision in her personal essay for ELLE.

{Sidebar: I applaud and support her, because a decision like a double mastectomy can be a tough one for any women to make. I am a registered medical assistant for a surgeon whose practice is made up of about 85-90% breast cancer patients. It can be heart-breaking, but breast cancer survivors are some of the strongest people I know!}

Nina currently oversees the fashion coverage for the magazine and runs the fashion department. She also covers the designer fashion markets of New York, Milan, and Paris, and is relied upon as a fashion authority and has participated in numerous television interviews. (Source: Wikipedia)

Nina has authored four books. “On September 5, 2007, NIna’s book, The Little Black Book of Style (Harper Collins) was released. The book has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese. On August 26, 2008, Nina’s second book for Harper Collins, The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own was released, with eight printings at the launch. Nina’s third book, The Style Strategy was published in September 2009. Nina Garcia’s Look Book was published in September 2010.” (Source: Wikipedia)

As I said earlier, her style is enviable. I always looked forward to reading her column in Marie Claire, and now in ELLE. I love every outfit she wears, even though it may not necessarily be my style, but her fashion sense is impeccable.

And she knows how to style a single button-down shirt paired with a statement skirt, like she did during NYFW back in 2015.

I recently checked out her book, “The One Hundred: A Guide to The Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own”, from my local library. In this book, she shares a comprehensive list of the essentials, the “must-haves.”

“Because these items have been there for me season after season,” wrote Nina. “They have been with me through thick and thin. When trends begin to fade away, these are the items I can always turn to with confidence.”

“… I give you my essential One Hundred. From the A-Line Dress to Converse sneaks, from the Cocktail Ring to the Little Black Dress, these are the pieces that have stood the test of time,” added Nina.

Have you read any of Nina Garcia’s books? What are you essentials, or your “must-haves”?
