It is always a pleasure when other bloggers or brands reach out to me with an idea and want to contribute to my blog. So when Holly Jones of Marleylilly contacted me and pitched today’s style post, I was thrilled to share it.

Putting Your Best Foot Forward

Trying the newest fashion craze is always fun, and testing new styles with accessories is a great way to experiment without overhauling our entire wardrobe. But trends come and go, especially when it comes to shoes. So sometimes we have to wonder: What are the classics?

Every Southern woman knows you can never have too many shoes, but there comes a time when you have to narrow things down to your all-star lineup of footwear. Keep reading to see the top 12 shoes every Southern woman should have in her closet.

1. Simple sneaker

An everyday sneaker might be the most important shoe to invest in because it has to take us everywhere! Both comfy and stylish, a classic pair of high or low top canvas sneakers are ideal when you’re running late or getting ready for a busy day.

Pick a pair of white or off-white tennis shoes with a pair of jeans and a clean, simple sweater for a chic, preppy look.

2. Classic pump

The pump is basically the Little Black Dress of shoes–every woman needs at least one pair. Just like a LBD, a pair of pumps will put any outfit on the fast track to a glamorous look. Go for a peep-toed pump if you just made a trip to the nail salon to show off a bright-colored pedicure.

3. Cowboy boot

This one might seem like a bit of a stereotype for a Southern woman, but the cowboy boot is an undeniable attention-grabber and goes with anything from a dress to a pair of daisy dukes. Not only are they a unique combination of tough and feminine (especially the ones with a lot of unique embroidery), they are also one of the most trend-defying shoes–while no one really knows who invented them, cowboy boots have been around since at least the 1870s. Talk about timeless!

4. Ballet flats

Just like a ballet bun, a ballet flat is simple, sweet and elegant. A more comfortable alternative to a high heel, a pair of ballet flats in a quality fabric and clean color can be worn to work, a meeting or a formal lunch. Try wearing a pair in a bold color like bright red, or pair them with a slim black pant and a fitted shirt for an Audrey Hepburn look.

5. Espadrille

The rope-soled espadrille is a total summertime classic that can transport you to a seaside French town in an instant. Worn as a flat, they can easily dress up a simple daytime outfit. As a wedge heel, they can give a dress all the elegance of a high heel with a beachy twist–and they can be worn for a lot longer without killing your feet.

6. Duck boots

One of the worst feelings in the world has to be having an outfit planned out the night before, only to wake up the next morning to find out it’s pouring rain–or snow–outside. Luckily, the duck boot exists. Waterproof and warm, duck boots are perfect for times when there’s no way you can step outside the house in any of your more delicate shoes without completely ruining them. Paired with a high, scrunched up statement sock or a tucked pair of pants, the duck boot can also give you a cozy cold-weather look that is perfect for a bonfire or camping trip. Also, if you’re ever looking to really go off the grid and explore nature, duck boots are your go-to!

7. Loafer

The perfect shoe for indoors or a casual day at the office, a simple loafer gives an instant classy appeal to any outfit. Wear a pair in leather or velvet for an extra sophisticated look, or go for some colorful embroidery or an animal print to show a little personality.

8. Nude heel

This shoe is part of a classic fashion trick: If you pick a pair that’s closest in color to your skin tone, a nude heel can lengthen your leg and make you seem longer and leaner. Wear with a flirty cocktail or summer dress for a model-esque look that will stun.

9. Statement heel

You know that moment when you’re out shopping and you see a shoe that you’re almost certain you’ve known in a past life? You need to buy that shoe. Whether it’s brightly colored, boldly designed or covered in tassels, feathers or glitter, everyone needs one high heel in their closet that sets them apart from the rest. Perfect for nights out dancing with the girls or for a special date, a pair of statement heels are meant to make you happy every time you look at them.

10. Simple sandals

Another summertime staple, a pair of simple sandals is a must-have for any trip to the beach, pool or boardwalk. Choose a pair with leather accents or winding straps for an elevated look, and consider taking this as an opportunity to paint your toenails in your favorite color.

11. Knee-high boots

Whether it’s a riding boot or a zipped up high heel, a knee-high boot is a clean, powerful and sexy statement shoe. Wear them over a pair of fitted jeans for a collected fall look, or with a short dress for an edgy appearance.

12. Mules

The mule (or kitten heel) used to go unappreciated, but now it’s become a favorite of some of the most fashion-forward people thanks to its revival on runways. Now, the mule is the ultimate combination of cute and elegant, and can be found in tons of fun colors and fabrics that give the shoe a more youthful look. Try a pastel pair to feel like a modern Marie Antoinette.

Remember, fashion should be a fun opportunity to explore what makes you feel and look your best. These 12 shoes every Southern woman should have in her closet are timeless choices that you can depend on as trends come and go. Starting with this list, you can find your personal style and rest assured that you’ll always be putting your best foot forward.
