Man of Style: Outlander’s Sam Heughan

“You do have to learn how to wear a kilt, and it’s certainly very liberating and very freeing, but surprisingly very comfortable to wear, to ride a horse in a kilt. I was surprised by that.” – Sam Heughan, actor in Outlander

I have always been a sucker for accents. British, Irish, Scottish, Australian, French, Italian, or even a good ol’ Southern accent {like my husband}. My cousin, Dallas, got me hooked on the Starz series, Outlander, and this series introduced me to Sam Heughan. He portrays the rugged Highlander, Jamie Fraser. His accent had me hooked! Those eyes and that piercing stare. That body. And did I mention, that accent? These are the reason that Sam Heughan is this month’s “Man of Style”.

In 2013, Heughan was cast as Jamie Fraser on the Starz period drama series Outlander. He was the first cast member officially announced, to great praise by the author of the series, Diana Gabaldon, who said, “That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart. Having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie, I feel immensely grateful to the production team for their painstaking attention to the soul of the story and characters.” {Source: Wikipedia}

In September 2016, he took part in the Great North Run to raise funds for Bloodwise (a UK cancer charity for blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma) that he supported since 2011, and became president of Scottland Bloodwise. Since 2015, he has also his own charitable found My Peak Challenge. {Source: Wikipedia}

“On the show, the 36-year-old Heughan plays the dreamy but star-crossed lover Jamie, a Highlander in 18th-century Scotland. In real life, Heughan grew up in the shadows of a 17th-century castle in Southwest Scotland, and his career has been no less fabulous. While still attending classes at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2003, he was nominated for an Olivier Award. Ten years and several TV roles later, he landed Outlander and the part that launched a zillion ‘shippers.” {Interview by fellow actor William Shatner in Interview Magazine}

Whether he is wearing a kilt or a suit, Heughan has women all around the world swooning.

Outlander won several awards at the People’s Choice Awards, including Favorite TV Show, Favorite Premium Sci-Fi/Fantasy Series, and Favorite Premium Sci-Fi/Fantasy Actor. His co-star, Caitriona Balfe, won the award for Favorite Premium Sci-Fi/Fantasy Actress.
