Pink is the New Black

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I work with a general surgeon who sees a lot of patients every day. Some have simple issues like a gallbladder problem or a hernia, but he also specializes in treating patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

If you really think about it, you know at least one person in your life that has been affected by breast cancer.  For me, it was my grandmother, Dorothy Lashlee (she passed away in April 2014), my aunt Barbara Howard (she passed away in January 2013), and my aunt Juanita Howard, who is a 20+ year breast cancer survivor who is now battling another type of cancer. I have fibrocystic breast disease, and I have had several cysts aspirated because they got so large that they began to bother me.

On October 24th, I will be walking in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Knoxville, Tenn., with some of friends and my fellow co-workers. I will not only be walking in honor of my family members who have been affected by breast cancer, but I will be walking in honor of all of my breast cancer patients and survivors.

Here is some information about breast cancer awareness “by the numbers” from Julep and the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation.

Are you participating in a Susan G. Komen walk? Are you walking in honor of someone who has had breast cancer or who is currently fighting breast cancer? Or are you a breast cancer survivor or going through treatment for breast cancer? I would love to hear from you, so please share your story in the comments below.

Have a great day!
