Woman of Style: Julia Roberts

With her trademark smile, Julia Roberts burst onto the scene as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman, and she hasn’t looked back. The two films I remember seeing her in before her Pretty Woman fame was Satisfaction (1988) and Mystic Pizza (1988). Julia Roberts once said about her success, “I’m just a girl from a little town in Georgia who had this giant, absurd dream.” (Source: IMDb) She played clarinet in the band in school and after graduating from high school, left Georgia for New York to become an actress. Well, this girl from the little town of Symrna, Georgia, has done some pretty amazing things […]

Fabulous and Over 40

Now that I’m in my 40s, I tend to find myself drawn to actresses over 40. They have a maturity, yet a young and playful side to them, that I find appealing and down-to-earth. Wendi McClendon-Covey. Melissa McCarthy. Octavia Spencer. Amy Poehler. Debra Messing.  These beautiful women are some of the most incredibly talented and funny women in movies and television today… and they are all fabulous and over 40! They have starred (separately, and sometimes together) in some of my favorite movies and TV shows. Wendi and Melissa co-starred in the all-female hit Bridesmaids, but I love Wendi as the sexpot […]

Movie Review: “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”

Last week, I turned down the lights, slipped a DVD into the player and watched with intrigue how seven seniors “outsourced” their retirement to a resort in India. What movie did I watch, you ask? The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Deb Patel, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Ronald Pickup, and Celia Imrie. Based on Deborah Moggach’s novel, These Foolish Things, this movie was heart-warming, funny, and touching. The screenplay was written by Ol Parker, and the movie was directed by John Madden, who also directed Shakespeare in Love.
