Lent: A Season of Reflection & Promise

I have written about Lent a couple of times in the past, and every year, I feel encouraged by giving up something that I feel is either bad for me or distracts me from my purpose in life. In the past, I have given up simple things like Diet Coke and chocolate, while last year I gave up Facebook.   Photo Source: PoetrySync via Pinterest I know the ashes are to remind us that we are all dust, and to dust we all shall return. It’s also a good reminder that life is precious. I’ve heard and read of people […]

Giving Something Up Takes Willpower and Sacrifice

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a time of reflection and fasting. To some, it is a time to give up smoking, drinking, cursing, certain foods, or certain “bad” habits. To others, it is a time of deep reflection and sacrifice on a deeper, less physical plane. I recently read a blog by a lovely lady named Kendra. Her blog, Catholic All Year, featured a post about Lent. It listed 66 things to either give up or take up this Lent, including a guide for beginners, intermediates, and advanced. Reflecting on Lent

“Throw me some beads, mister!” The last day of gluttony, debauchery, wild celebrations, and a last hoo-rah for anyone and everyone preparing for the upcoming Lent season is today – “Fat Tuesday”, for tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. As anyone knows who participates in Lent, Ash Wednesday starts the fasting and religious obligations associated with the season of Lent. Being from West Texas, I don’t ever recall being familiar with Mardi Gras or “Carnaval”… that is, until I moved to Biloxi, Miss., and was given […]

A Season of Change

Spring “Marches” in and brings “April” showers, which brings “May” flowers… or something like that! What I mean is that Spring is almost here! A lot has happened in the last month and now I have a lot of time on my hands! All I need to do is figure out what I’m going to do with that time! I guess now I have no excuse not to work on that screenplay for the Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab. So here’s an update… First of all, I am officially without a job, which is okay because with my experience I know I […]

Lent: A Season of Sacrifice and Soul-Searching

Lent started today, on Ash Wednesday, and officially ends on Holy Thursday (if you’re Catholic) or on the eve of Easter Sunday. Many religions observe this season of reflection, sacrifice, pentance, and fasting. This morning of Ash Wednesday, I’ve been reflecting on what I plan to (1) give up, and (2) take up. I figure if I’m going to give up something “bad” for me that I’ll take up something “good” to replace the bad thing that’s gone. Last year for Lent, I gave up Diet Cokes (although I am totally back on the bottle now) and gossip magazine sites, and I took […]
