A Few of My Favorite Actresses…

I sat down at my desk this evening with the plan to compile a list of a few of my favorite actors and actresses; however, as I started jotting down names, the list grew longer by the second! So here’s “Part I” of my list… The Actresses (in no particular order)! 1. My favorite Elizabeth Taylor movie is The Taming of the Shrew, which I saw in junior high school English class after we read the play. Even in black and white, she was gorgeous. 2. Judy Garland’s most famous role is probably that of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. […]

A Few of My Favorite Things

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, Brown paper packages tied up with string, These are a few of my favorite things…” – Maria, played by Julie Andrews in Sound of Music. I often find myself singing this song, especially when it comes to “my favorite things.” I credit Oprah for giving me this idea. The Art of Thank You Notes / www.vanessahwood.com

In one of my first blogs of the year, I decided to do one special thing for myself every month and one special thing for someone else every month. My “one for me” in January was joining the local Writer’s Guild. It’s definitely “old school” and most people prefer the quicker method of communication – email. Handwritten letters and cards, sent through the mail, convey a sense of intimacy. I think it provides a sort of connection that email cannot. You, the reader, can see the pen strokes in each word, in each letter. It’s personal. Letter-writing takes time and patience. Even picking out just the right card […]

New hairstyle, new me?

haircut / www.vanessahwood.com

“I think that the most important thing a woman can have – next to talent, of course – is her hairdresser.” – Joan Crawford Every few months, I get a bee in my bonnet and I think about getting a new hairstyle. The problems with that are (1) I have naturally curly hair that does not want to be straight, (2) I don’t have the side-profile for short hair, and (3) I am totally afraid of getting my hair cut short (again). But would a new hairstyle make me feel like a “new me?” Over the years, I’ve had bangs, […]
