How to Style Summer Neutrals

Summertime often means bright, bold colors, but I like the look and coolness of summer neutrals. With a neutral palette, you can mix freely — there’s no such thing as clashing shades.

There is something so effortless about a muted tone ensemble in nudes, taupes and khaki colors. There’s something about this palette that feels so chic and put together.

In fact, there are many positives about neutrals:

  • everything always matches;
  • you are able to wear items over and over and people won’t notice;
  • they’re the foundation of your wardrobe;
  • you focus on fit and shape because the color is not the emphasis; and…
  • you spend less time getting ready because you know the fit is perfect and the colors match.

Neutrals tones are soft, subtle, and blend effortlessly with other colors. Traditionally colors such as white, beige, grey, taupe, khaki, and ivory are considered neutral. All of these colors can have different undertones and can be considered either warm or cool {which doesn’t make them any less neutral}.

Olivia Palermo, seen in two different summery neutral styles below, looks effortlessly chic. Whether it’s a maxi skirt or tailored shorts, Olivia definitely nails summer neutrals.

The trick is to pair neutral colors that complement each other, such as brown and orange or gray and violet. I also think that camo partners nicely with neutrals as well, especially in the once-military-only olive/khaki combo. Add stylish shoes and a versatile neutral bag and you’re head-to-toe ready to go.

If you must have brighter colors in your wardrobe, then add a pop of color with a stand-out shoe, purse {or clutch}, or jewelry.

If you gravitate towards a lot of nude, taupe, and khaki tones, you might try blush tones.

How do you like to style neutrals for summer?
