Puff sleeves is so on-trend this season, especially after it was seen all over last season’s runways. This bold silhouette can take your look to the next level, but be careful that you don’t let this trend take you back to the 80s.

It’s a casual, simple and toned down look that still gives you the elegance and femininity of a dress. Add to that puff sleeves and you took your look the next level. Elevate it with ankle boots or heels and tone it down with ballet flats or sneakers.

Sheer fabric is a more subtle option to showoff the trend, and a cinched waist tones down the volume and adds shape. Many celebrity stylists say the emphasis on the shoulder helps create the illusion of a smaller center, or waistline.

Stylist Nicole Chavez, who dresses Kristen Bell, Jessica Simpson and Rachel Bilson, says “that broad shoulder, that puff sleeve, it really does give a very feminine form. So it’s gonna make anybody’s waist look much smaller.” {USA Today}

Stylist Erin Walsh, who dresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Alison Brie and Beanie Feldstein, says she feels pulled by the puffed and large shoulders. “It’s just kind of flattering on most women. It makes you look more proportional and thinner.” {USA Today}

“Shake it up with more modern accents that don’t feel quite so literal to that reference… Clean crisp accents in terms of accessories and less is more probably works to balance it out. Wherever you’re injecting the volume, you kind of have to balance it out.”

Walsh also said that you’ll want to nip in the waist so it is more flattering when styling a bolder sleeve or shoulder. She also said that if you pick a puff sleeve with voluminous arms, you’ll want to balance it out with an off-the-shoulder look, or a bare shoulder so you can show off your collar bones.

She adds, “volume in the arms kind of helps the rest of the story out, I think it’s a good hack in fact.”
