Dressing up for fall doesn’t mean that you only have to wear sweaters with jeans or leggings. A couple of weeks ago, I featured some stylish and casual outfits to try out this fall. All of those outfits featured a sweater or long-sleeve shirt with jeans, leggings, or dress pants. Today I’m going to give you a few tips on how to style dresses and skirts for fall.

Seven Tips on How to Style Dresses and Skirts During Fall

To help make your outfit more fall-appropriate, here are just a few tips on how you can spruce up your fall outfits.

Wear a simple long-sleeve button-down under a sleeveless dress for a casual, stylish outfit.

Your sleeveless dresses can totally transition into your fall wardrobe with just a couple of extras. Go for a polished and preppy look by pairing a long-sleeve button-down under a sleeveless dress. I love this classic look from fashion, travel and lifestyle blogger Jess Ann Kirby. She looks so ready for fall!

Wear a chunky sweater over a maxi dress or a long skirt for a comfortable, chic look.

Still want to wear your favorite summer maxi dress during fall? Then cover up with your favorite oversized or chunky sweater. This looks like British fashion editor and fashion correspondent for E! News Zanna Roberts Rassi. She has such a cool British girl vibe that I can’t help but look to her for fashion inspiration.

Layer a fitted turtleneck under a slip dress for a clean silhouette.

Try wearing a fitted turtleneck under a silky slip dress as an ultra cool date night outfit. I love had blogger Carolyn Yuen Marino, of Hey Pretty Thing, paired a fitted black turtleneck bodysuit under a navy silk slip dress. This look is a new twist on a classic that really works well year after year.

Wear a long-sleeve plaid button-down with a mini skirt.

Take your mini skirt from summer to fall by pairing it with a fancy long-sleeve plaid button-down, like style and beauty blogger Julie Engel, of Gal Meets Glam. I really love the orange mini skirt paired with the blue plaid shirt. She always looks so polished and lady-like!

Wear tights and boots with your dress or skirt and sweater.

Wear tights and boots with your summer floral dresses like fashion blogger Tonya, of The Mop Top. This is a stylish way to wear patterned tights.

Keep a jacket draped over your shoulders.

Draping a jacket over your shoulders keeps you warm but also ups your fall style game. I like how fashion photographer and stylist Lee Oliveira pairs two different style plaids with a simple, yet elegant red dress. Slip on some sexy lace-up heels and you’re ready for a girl’s night out.

Throw on a scarf and tall boots.

Pairing a simple button down dress, like a shirt dress, with tall boots and a scarf is a perfect way to dress for fall. To me, this look screams fall. I love shirt dresses and this look pairs all of my favorite fall pieces — tall boots, shirt dress, puffy vest, warm scarf. I would totally wear this outfit on repeat all fall!
