Woman of Style: Julia Roberts

With her trademark smile, Julia Roberts burst onto the scene as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman, and she hasn’t looked back.

The two films I remember seeing her in before her Pretty Woman fame was Satisfaction (1988) and Mystic Pizza (1988).

Julia Roberts once said about her success, “I’m just a girl from a little town in Georgia who had this giant, absurd dream.” (Source: IMDb) She played clarinet in the band in school and after graduating from high school, left Georgia for New York to become an actress.

Well, this girl from the little town of Symrna, Georgia, has done some pretty amazing things with some pretty amazing people.

She has starred along side some very handsome actors – George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Denzel Washington, Hugh Grant, and Javier Bardem. She’s even been in some relationships with some very handsome actors – Jason Patric, Liam Neeson, Dylan McDermott, and Benjamin Bratt. She was engaged to Keifer Sutherland but called off the wedding three days before they were to get married. And I’m pretty sure her quickie marriage to Lyle Lovett shocked everyone!

Julia Roberts co-starred with Richard Gere in “Pretty Woman” and then again in “Runaway Bride”

Julia has starred in some pretty amazing movies. She portrayed the real-life activist Erin Brockovich in Erin Brockovich (2000) and in 2010, she portrayed author Liz Gilbert in Eat Pray Love.

She won an Oscar for playing Erin Brockovich-Ellis, making her one of thirteen actors to win the Award for playing a real person who was still alive at the time of the Award ceremony (as of 2007). (Source: IMDb)

Julia portrayed a law student in The Pelican Brief (1993), a medical student in Flatliners (1990), and Tinkerbell in Hook  (1991). She tried to steal her best friend (Dylan McDermott) from his fiance (Cameron Diaz) in My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997). She fell in love with her sister’s (Catherine Zeta Jones) ex-husband (John Cusack) in America’s Sweethearts (2001). She played Charlotte the spider in the children’s classic Charlotte’s Web (2006). She played Sally Fields’ newlywed daughter with diabetes in Steel Magnolias (1989), and she played George Clooney’s love in Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Ocean’s Twelve (2004).

“We are happy as clams. I am fulfilled by my own life on an hourly basis. Every little moment is amazing if you let yourself access it. I learn that all the time from my kids; children are so filled with wonder. My youngest son woke up at 5 a.m. the other morning and said to me, ‘It’s a beautiful day, Mama!’ What’s more precious than that?” (Source: IMDb)

Fun Fact: A 9000 year old female skeleton excavated in Bulgaria in November 2004, was called by the archaeologists “Julia Roberts” because of the perfect teeth it had. They said that woman would have had a perfect smile – just like the actress. (Source: IMDb)

It is believed that while she was filming Eat Pray Love, that she had converted to Hinduism. She has publicly embraced the Hindu faith and has said that she and her family go to temple to “chant, pray and celebrate.”

Clarifying that actual spiritual satisfaction was the real reason behind her converting to Hinduism, Julia Roberts said: “I have no intention of demeaning any other religion simply because of my fondness for Hinduism. I don’t believe in comparing religions or human beings. A comparison is a very mean thing to do. I have received real spiritual satisfaction through Hinduism.” (Source: www.hinduism.about.com)

Julia Roberts is a wonderfully talented actress and is truly one of “America’s sweethearts.” She fully embraces her roles as an actress, a spokeswoman, a model, and a wife and a mother. She has aged well and has lived well, as is seen on her radiant face with her trademark smile in full view.
